Nunobiki Herb Gardens

Posted In: Japan | Kobe | Travel

During our last trip to mainland Japan back in June 2018 we visited 7 cities including OsakaKyoto, Kobe, Himeji, Hiroshima, Miyajima and Fukuoka. On our third day we headed to Kobe, 40 minutes away by train from Osaka. After walking around Kobe Harborland and having lunch at Cafe Freundlieb, the coolest cafe inside an old church, we headed over to the Nunobiki Herb Gardens to see my favorite thing ever, flowers.

The garden is accessible via the Shin-Kobe Ropeway gondola lift or hiked from downtown Kobe. The Nunobiki Herb Garden is Japan’s largest herb garden and houses around 75,000 herbs and about 200 kinds of flowers that bloom throughout the year. There are 12 gardens in total surrounded by picturesque paths and it also features an amazing view of the city. Check out the calendar of blooming flowers and get ready for all the flower spam.

Straight out of the ropeway you walk into this gorgeous plaza and we felt like we were instantly transported to Europe. The rest house was inspired by the historic Wartburg Castle of Eisenach, Germany.
After the clock tower is the Rose Symphony Garden which features about 60 different types of roses, but mainly English roses. The flowers were fully bloomed and I could not have been happier.

^^ the lavender garden was blooming too! ^^

^ and then we stumbled upon ANOTHER rose garden, called the four seasons garden! ^

^^ lastly we visited the Kaze no Oka Flower Garden before heading out ^^

^^ you can see the Nunobiki Waterfall from the ropeway ^^
