Transitioning

^^ reusing this picture … because why not? ^^
If you’ve read my past blogposts, you know that i just started a new job! Hooray! I had so many mixed feelings the first day i worked that i knew i had to write them all in my journal aka my blog! Bottom line is i haven’t worked in a whole year!! Whaat? I know! …i really can’t believe it’s been a year since i quit my awesome job at Forever 21. I miss it so much!
I’ve been looking for jobs ever since i got to Okinawa but let me tell you that when you live on a small island where there are over 10 military bases around with thousands of americans and the locals speak a foreign language, you are very limited work-wise. After spending months waiting for “the perfect job” with the perfect schedule and pay, i decided to stop being so picky and i applied for two retail jobs. I got a cashier position at the Base Exchange and although it’s not “the perfect job” it’ll keep me occupied, out of the house and making at least some money until i find a better job. I applied for some positions at some school and i’m praying to hear back anytime. The store i work in is as big as a Walmart or a Target, and it’s the biggest Exchange store on island, with the highest amount of traffic (lucky me!)
Here are some things i’m going to have to get used to:
1.  i am the only american cashier!! Why? Well locals have priority for jobs on base over americans, with that said, man is it weird! In a good/bad way. Good way, well i get to make friends with the locals!! i’ve always wanted to befriend japanese people, like actually be able to talk to them and get to know them; now i get the chance! 🙂 Bad way, well language barrier (duh!), just picture my face when i’m standing there and all of my coworkers are speaking japanese amongst themselves, haha! Awkweird!
2. I’ve never been a cashier in my life!!! This whole job is something i need to get used to. From standing in a cash register for six hours straight, to dealing with customers face-to-face-to-face, coupons .. lot’s of coupons (UGH!), to saying the same thing over and over, oh and i hate math, plus annoying customers. Haha! Let’s just say it’s obviously not all sunshine and rainbows, and i can’t wait to get a more low-key job in a quiet office.
3. 15 minute breaks!!!! Are you kidding me? At Forever21 if you worked over 4 hours, you automatically got an hour break.. but NO, not here.. I barely get time to eat a snack and go to the bathroom before i have to run back to the cash register. It sucks to say the least.
4. Exhaustion, you probably noticed i didn’t post as much this past week it’s because i’ve been so tired after work to even sit down and write something. My brain has been shutting down really fast as soon as i get home. I had forgotten what being exhausted felt like.. and man i did not miss my sore ankles. I worked the night shift on friday and saturday (they were hell!) I’ve been trying to enjoy the free time i have with G, cuddling up on the couch watching Doctor Who and Supernatural!
I had new hire training today, which means i have a bit more energy from sitting on my butt all day! Even though it was boring i’m glad to have had another day out of that store!! please send some good vibes my way, so that i can survive the next couple of months! 🙂 we’re hoping to make a trip to Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto in December and what’s keeping me going is my goal to save up as much money for that! Wish me luck!
