Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大社) – Kyoto, Japan

On our first full day in Kyoto we did a couple of fun things but my favorite was the Fushimi Inari Shrine! I think it was the attraction i was most excited about visiting. The Shinto shrine was put in place on a mountain top, in order to worship Inari, the God of Rice. There are several fox statues throughout the shrine because they are thought to be the messengers. The orange torii gates, are traditional Japanese gates, all of which were donated by those who have been successful in business as a way to show gratitude.

^^ After praying for happiness and success we decided to buy a mini torii gate (¥800) and leave it in the shrine! ^^

^^ Each torii gate has the names and donation date on the back. It took me by surprise when i noticed this detail^^

^^ Although a big adjustment from the Tokyo subway, i loved the older look of the train stations in Kyoto ^^

  • Going a few weeks after New Years was a bad idea. There were still soooo many people there! It looks like you had the place to yourself, just looking at your pictures. Lucky duck! I loved it there though. It was so calming, even with all those people there. I'll have to go back when I have the chance to go to Kyoto again.

  • I love Fushimi inari shrine! It`s so different to other shrines and has a kind of magical atmosphere! I haven't been in ages though and these photos are making me want to go again.

  • Wow, what a beautiful place and it looks like such an adventure was had!

  • I totally agree it is magical!! 🙂

  • There's nothing like walking through thousands upon thousands of bright orange torii gates! This shrine is definitely magical! 😀
